Lens replacement surgery aka cataract surgery

Lens replacement surgeries are performed in our clinic with the Swiss company Oertli cataract machine, which is unique and the first of its kind in Estonia. It is a mobile device that removes clouded lenses very efficiently. We transplant Johnson & Johnson, Zeiss and other artificial lenses, as well as multifocal and toric lenses during cataract surgeries.

Dr. Juri Ivanov has been working as an ophthalmologist since 2007. He studied cataract surgery at the Eye Clinic of East Tallinn Central Hospital and at the Fyodorov Clinic in St. Petersburg. Dr. Ivanov has performed more than 10,000 cataract surgeries during his career.

One Step Forward: Tired Eyes

ls it necessary to wait for the cataract to consider this surgery?

ln lenses that do not yet have a cataract, but do have the dysfunction typical of presbyopia, we replace them, in many cases, with a lens that is capable of restoring that youth that the lens had before starting with presbyopia.

The new designs of intraocular lenses have come a long way. We are able to correct previous refractive errors (such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or
presbyopia) and offer increasing independence from glasses at different distances.

A Less Invasive Surgery

Likewise, lens replacement surgery has also advanced and is becoming less invasive, with the reduction in the size of the incision through which the lens is inserted (approximately 2.2 mm) being one of the main advances in lens surgery for cataracts or presbyopia.

Technological innovation through:

  • The introduction of surgical microinstruments
  • State-of-the-art lasers
  • lntelligent image guidance systems

It allows achieving great precision and safety in the results of the cataract operation, as well as facilitating a faster recovery.

Although the aging of the naturat lens of the eye is a completely natural process, it is important to visit the ophthalmologist periodically to confirm the diagnosis and assess correction with glasses, a new prescription or refractive surgery.

How to Recover Visual Youth?

From the age of 45, we begin to have difficulties leading a normal life using near vision.

At first, we notice them in circumstances that are not entirely routine, btt as time progresses, more everyday tasks are affected, such as working on the computer, cooking, or even eating.

Why do these difficulties occur? Can visual youth be alleviated and recovered?

These difficulties are caused by the aging of a natural lens of the eye, called the crystalline Iens and responsible for us to see
objects correctly at different distances. After the age of 40, it gradually loses elasticity and ability to focus, beginning its process
of dysfunction that, finally, ends in the typical opacity of a cataract.

The visual changes that occur after the age of 45 are very frequently due to lens dysfunction. Some of the most common symptoms are:

  • Blurry vision.
  • Sensitivity to colors decreases.
  • Frequent changes in graduation.
  • Changes in near vision.

Choosing the correct lens for you

The characteristics of your eyes will determine the choice of the lens. When choosing the lens, the doctor also takes into account other aspects, such as the patient’s character, work area, hobbies and lifestyle, in order to determine the lens that suit your needs.
