Many eye diseases are genetic. If there has been glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, or other rarer genetic eye conditions in the family, it is recommended that offspring undergo genetic testing. Unfortunately, we cannot yet change our genes, but people with a higher risk of disease can modify their lifestyle and visit an eye doctor more frequently to detect the condition as early as possible.
At Turman Eye Clinic, it is possible to purchase easy-to-perform genetic tests from Genorama during a visit to an ophthalmologist or optometrist. The individual can collect a sample from the oral mucosa using a cotton swab and send it by mail to the laboratory for testing. Results arrive in two to three weeks along with recommendations on what to change in your lifestyle. Available tests include:
In addition to genetic tests for eye diseases, it is possible to examine the composition of your gut microbes with a microbiome test. The microbiome is the collection of genomes of all microorganisms living in the human body. View GutWell sample results.
Microbiome diversity, species richness, and composition are important for intestinal and overall health. An imbalanced microbiome can lead to various health issues such as overweight, digestive problems, and autoimmune diseases. Recent research has shown that the gut microflora also influences a common modern problem – dry eye syndrome.
If you want to know your hereditary predisposition to 35 different diseases including glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and more common systemic diseases, we offer the GeneWell test. View GeneWell sample results.
We recommend genetic testing for age-related macular degeneration for children of patients affected by this disease to determine their risk level and how lifestyle changes can help reduce these risks. View sample test results.
Further treatment of age-related macular degeneration is carried out at our AMD Center.
If there have been rarer hereditary eye diseases in the family, such as Stargardt disease, retinitis pigmentosa, and others, we can perform a blood test and send it to the Asper Biogene laboratory. In these cases, a prior ophthalmologist visit is required.
